Punjabi Dal Tadka Recipe
Dal Tadka is one of the most popular dal recipes. Basically, dal tadka are cooked lentils, which are lastly tempered with oil or ghee, fried spices, and coriander. It’s rich and appetizing flavor makes it suitable to be served with an array of Indian Flat Bread or Rice.
Ingredients
For the dal:
- 1 cuptoor dal
- ½ inchginger, crushed
- 1onion, finely choppeds
- 1tomato, finely chopped
- 2 tspgarlic, crushed
- 1 tspturmeric powder
- 1 tspred chili powder
- fewcoriander leaves, chopped
- 1 tspcoriander powder
- saltto taste
for the tempering/tadka:
- 2 tspghee or clarified butter
- 1 tspmustard seeds
- 1 tspcumin seeds/jeera
- 3red chilies, dried
- pinchof asafoetida/hing
- ½ tspred chili powder
- ½ tspgaram masala powder
- fewcurry leaves
Directions
To make dal tadka:
- Pressure cook 1 cup of toor dal in 4 cups of water for 40 minutes.
- Heat ghee in a non-stick pan and saute onions till they turn golden brown.
- Add crushed garlic and ginger.
- Saute for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until tomato release oil.
- Add red chili powder and turmeric powder.
- Add coriander powder and fry without burning the spices.
- Add in cooked daland mix well with onion tomato gravy.
- Add salt to taste.
- Adjust the consistency by adding required water.
- Add chopped coriander leaves.
Tadka for dal tadka recipe:
- In a pan pour ghee, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chili powder, curry leaves, hing and dried red chili and let them splutter.
- Pour the tadka on dal.
- Serve with steamed rice or Indian Flat Bread.
