Ganesh Chaturthi Special Steamed Modak Recipe
Steamed Modak is a traditional sweet dish that is offered to Lord Ganesh on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. Modak is very popular in Maharashtra, India. The sweet filling inside the Modak is made of fresh grated coconut and jaggery and the soft shell/coating is made from rice flour and then it is steamed in the steamer. This dish is can be very easily prepared at your home within few minutes. Try this sweet dish this festival.
Ingredients
For The Dough
- 2 cupsrice flour (chawal ka atta)
For The Filling
- 1-1/4 cupsgrated jaggery (gur)
- 2 cupsfreshly grated coconut
- 1 tbsppoppy seeds (khus-khus)
- 1/2 tspcardamom (elaichi) powder
Other Ingredients
- 1 tspghee for kneading and greasing
Directions
For the dough
- Boil 1¾ cups of water in a deep non-stick pan and once done, switch off the flame and place the rice flour in a deep bowl and add the boiled water gradually.
- Mix it well by using a spoon in the beginning and then knead into a soft and smooth dough.
- Cover it with a lid and keep it aside for 10 minutes.
For the filling
- Heat a deep non-stick pan, add the jaggery and cook on a low flame for 1 to 2 minutes or till the jaggery melts and stir continuously.
- Add the coconut, poppy seeds and cardamom powder, mix it well and cook on a slow flame for 4 to 5 minutes or till all the moisture evaporates and the mixture thickens and keep it aside to cool slightly.
- Divide the filling into equal portions and keep it aside.
How to proceed
- Knead the dough once again using ½ tsp of ghee and keep it aside and grease a Modak mold by using very little ghee and close it.
- Take a portion of the dough, press it into the cavity of the Modak mold till it is evenly lined on all the sides.
- Fill the dough cavity with a portion of the filling and take a smaller portion of the dough and spread it evenly at the base of the Modak mold so as to seal the filling.
- De mold the Modak from the Modak mold and place a steamer plate in a steamer and place a banana leaf on it.
- Moisten all the Modaks with little water by using your fingertips and then place the Modaks on the banana leaf and steam on a medium flame for 10 minutes.
- Once done, switch off the flame and carefully place it on a plate and serve it.
